It is completely possible for our kids to get up for the current start time and get a good night sleep. It is also likely these same kids are very healthy, physically active in sports or recreation, take music lessons or other creative pursuits, have a part time job and take their academics very seriously.

I do not support the time change. I am not happy with those who have belittled those who do oppose or those who have trivialized this decision making process. i do want peace.

It is an impractical choice which would cause athletes to miss multiple classes to get to games on time as well as making jobs, music lessons, dance, gymnastics, community service, etc...impossible to fit in. It would also just have everything pushed back an hour, including homework, thereby pushing back bedtimes. This would still cause kids to be tired.

How amazing it was when I was a teenager and WANTED to get myself up at 4:00am on a weekend to go deer hunting or whatnot, I could manage no problem. The rule in my house was bedtime at 9:00pm on school nights growing up. I grew up with many farm families in my region. Somehow these kids managed to get up and do chores every morning before getting ready for school! This is about discipline and a mindset. I've worked rotating shift work my whole adult life, and I understand circadian rhythms. It doesn't take a PHD to understand that adequate sleep is the key, and this issue is one of teens not wanting to go to bed at night. I do not support a change to a later start time.

This time change is not in my boys best interest and I am their Mom, so their interest is the one I will fight for.

I do not believe we should change the start time. While the concept around the idea is not without merit in practical terms it would have a negative impact on working students, parents and after school extracurricular activities.

A later start time would be difficult for our family. We do not support it.

I am opposed to changing the start time. This will have negative consequences on our student athletes. What about all those families who rely on older kids to get the younger ones off the elementary bus?? Kids will go to bed later and wake up later. What will happen when they enter the real world???

There is already a remedy for students strongly affected by lack of sleep. They can take one or more courses online and shorten their in school time in the morning. The district doesn't need to change everyone's schedule to accommodate those affected.

How about the 15 minute school lunch time (that begins at 10:30AM of some) at ORMS? Lets fix THAT! I bet there are plenty of studies to show healthy eating, eating at the proper times and eating slowly, impacts your health positively!

The science is not clear in spite of the rhetoric from advocates. After-school activities will be curtailed. Let the controlled trials shake out the evidence while the town creatively addresses those with a problem by other means.

I oppose a later start time.
I feel a later start time:
-Will have a negative impact on academics for athletes, particularly those who train early (hockey, swim etc.) and athletes who already leave school early for meets/games.
-Will reduce family time before school as many parents will leave for work before their children
-Will reduce after school family time as extracurriculars will run later into the evening. Family dinners will be nearly impossible for many busy families, (as they already are!)
-Will not give our kids ample afterschool 'down time,' a commodity already in short supply
-Will negatively impact teachers, adults who are "fresher" earlier in the day
-Is NOT in any way a guarantee that students will get their recommended amount of sleep
-Will negatively impact working students with after school jobs
-Will cut into extracurriculars and enrichment activities like after school music, art and sports
-Will have negative impacts on schedules, childcare and other realities for both working and stay at home families
I hope as parents and educators we can encourage and teach our kids to take responsibility for their physical and psychological health by getting their recommended sleep time, by encouraging exercise and a healthy diet, by teaching reasonable bedtimes, and reducing evening screen time. The impact of this education would benefit every kid in a positive way!
I respect the oppositions concerns and I hope that they will respect mine. We are all wanting the best for our kids!
