Keep North Glendale Elementary Green

Putting in more hard surface just for parking is a terrible plan and design. Common sense is to: A) Put a drive in from existing parking area all the way around perimeter and exiting onto Chelsea Ave. This would be a one-way drive with additional parallel parking spots along side. B) Redesign existing parking area to allow more parking with the new drive described above. C) Reduce the size of the existing asphalt area in back and add green space. (Optional) D) Never hire the company again that recommend the current design as it is a complete traffic failure. Putting in an entrance/exit directly at a 3-way stop is a recipe for disaster as can be seen everyday! Any traffic study would tell you that.

Bad to teach children how to wreck the local environment. Green fields or asphalt? No choice

Both the City of Kirkwood and KSD are out of control.

I have some Keysor kids and we don’t have a huge parking lot but we have an award winning outdoor space that is utilized daily by our teaching staff, students and community! We would much rather park on side streets and walk a block to school than have to give up our PROJECT IDEA SPACE for more blacktop. I know the rest of the Keysor community would agree and it’s sounds like the North Glendale community appreciates their green space WAY MORE THAN A SEA OF BLACKTOP. I think the decision should be easy. Keep Kirkwood/Glendale as green as possible.

I would just like to point out that North Glendale is not responsible for providing the only green space in the entire community. If residents have a problem with the lack of green space, perhaps they should take that up with the City of Glendale itself? The school’s first responsibility is the safety of the children, not to provide people living nearby with green space (although that is a nice perk of living next to a school of course). The police and fire departments have determined that the current arrangement is NOT safe, so the school needs to act accordingly.

There is no question about the negative effect of a huge space covered in asphalt on a beautiful neighborhood like Glendale. Instead of destroying much needed green space the effort should be to improve and expand the space. Why is it that when we want our kids to play outside we have drive them somewhere to a park. Give kids and their families place for outdoor recreation. I live next to a giant parking lot and teenagers come here to at night to drink and smoke weed and drive around in circles. Big space covered in asphalt also has a negative effect on our environment. It increases the temperature in summertime. We all need more green space not parking space! Maybe we would all walk more instead of driving everywhere!

Don’t take away the green space, the school district has already destroyed the green space at Tilman Elementary. Please do not let it happen here. Find a different solution.

I don’t live by the school, I don’t face the school, and I do not have children in the school. However I do pay taxes for that school and I have an opinion. I go to work during the rush and I can tell you that I never mind sitting in traffic. I enjoy watching the children and their parents going to school. It seems that none of the residents who live around the school mind the traffic and accommodate the traffic as well. If everybody agrees that we don’t mind the traffic, I don’t understand why you’re upsetting the residents by insisting on putting in a larger parking lot Most of the teachers do not live in Glendale. They don’t care what our green space is once they leave for the evening or in the summer during their break. We DO care and apparently there are a lot of the Glendale residents who use the green space over the weekends and during the summer when it is closed. My vote and my tax dollars go to saving the green space for these families. PS I live one street over (Brownell) and never was contacted about any hearings at City Hall

Please save our green space!

I wish there was an alternative to extending the parking lot. I have a number of questions. Firstly, when was this communicated? My daughter is about to enter 2nd grade. I feel like I read emails, ng today communications and I cannot remember seeing anything about this. Secondly, what sorts of feasibility studies have been done to assess the impact this proposal will have on the numbers of cars impacted at drop off/pick up, and lastly, have we really exhausted all alternatives? I feel that a community level meeting, drawing input from all stakeholders could have been beneficial. Did this happen in the early planning stages? Paving over green space is so final.

I’ve read the minutes from every PTO meeting this school year. Unless I missed it, and possibly I did, I saw no mention of this project. Can someone on the planning committee please show me where this was communicated to the entire school in the 2017-2018 academic year?

It makes no sense to take away even more green space from the children. Seriously, they don’t have enough room to play as it is so let’s give them more asphalt… Not!

This is unfortunate

While the call to "Keep the Greenspace" isn't a bad thing....some perspective might be nice. 1. Glendale is one of the greenest places in St. Louis already. We all live in one giant greenspace essentially. While we shouldn't just give away greenspace for free, offering up a small amount of space in exchange for better safety for our students isn't unreasonable. There is a soccer field at Sappington and Lockwood. A great park just down Kirkham road at Larson Park. A neat little park behind Taco Bell in Warson Woods. All easily accessible to Glendale residents. 2. There will still be ample greenspace at the school for our kids during the times it is needed. Our school has best in class playgrounds, plenty of blacktop space for all sorts of sports and activities, a pavilion for outdoor time, a huge landscaped front lawn, and will still have an entire soccer field of grass once the new lot is built. Look at a school like Mary Queen of Peace. There is not a single blade of grass up there, and those kids still have plenty of fun at recess and turn out just fine. 3. While it may only seem like a small inconvenience for the streets around the school to be congested for 20-30 minutes day, don't forget that the major concern is the nightmare scenario. It's the scenario where the Glendale Fire Dept needs to get to an emergency on Manchester Road right as school gets out, and because of the traffic and congestion on at the intersection, someone losses track of a kid and something horrible happens as the fire truck comes speeding down Sappington. What if first responders aren't able to access the school as quickly as they should be able to because there are parents parked in the fire lane in the middle of the day because there are no parking spots? From a safety standpoint, it's just not safe for our kids to not have adequate parking. And sure, people can walk. We live two blocks from school. People park on our street all the time for schoo
