Keep Our music teachers full time at Southern Middle

South County is a treasure of a place to raise our kids. We are fewer in number and have smaller schools but we have amazing teachers in several subjects. It is truly a huge disservice to the students and families of South County if you decrease these positions. We need these positions to remain full time to not only keep these very fine teachers but also to allow for enough slots for the students to be able to fit into their schedules. Please keep these positions FULL TIME!!

I could not believe it when I heard that both music teachers at SMS had been offered only half-time positions for next year. As a music teacher (private lessons) myself, I know some of the orchestra students and can see how far they (and the orchestra) have come over the years with Mr. Albright. Please don't do something that will decrease the vitality of the instrumental music program at Southern Middle School.

I could not believe it when I heard that both music teachers at SMS had been offered only half-time positions for next year. As a music teacher (private lessons) myself, I know some of the orchestra students and can see how far they (and the orchestra) have come over the years with Mr. Albright. Please don't do something that will decrease the vitality of the instrumental music program at Southern Middle School.

No middle school music position should be part-time. I could post articles for days about the impact of music education on math and reading, but music education should be valued for music's sake, for the discipline, for the self efficacy, and for the beauty and pleasure it brings to the world. Please keep these highly qualified and highly decorated teachers as full-time educators. At the very least, they deserve it, but more importantly the kids do.

I could post articles for days about the impact of music education on math and reading, but music education should be valued for music's sake, for the discipline, for the self efficacy, and for the beauty and pleasure it brings to the world. Mr. Albright and Mrs. Walker are both excellent teachers. It will be a tragic loss to all the South County Schools if Southern Middle loses them. Performing music is one of the best brain exercises their is, and all middle school students should be required to take music courses each year.

excellent point--the money for PARCC is endless (and a mystery at the county level--the state funds it and our county has no idea what it costs), but 2 teachers salaries are a show-stopper.

SMS has earned several awards for its outstanding music program--Mr. Albright stretches kids who can barely play in the fall of 6th grade. We all watch them become accomplished musicians who learn how to achieve more than they expected of themselves and work as a real team.
Parents of elementary age students: PLEASE re-think your child's commitment to music, especially 5th graders who will be at SMS next year. The school and county administration manage staffing levels by a numbers game--not what is in the bigger picture best interest of educating children. IF they don't have the enrollment, they can't have the teachers. Parents must be both vocal (kudos to everyone who has responded here) but also demonstrate their commitment by getting their children to enroll in band, chorus or strings. Middle school is when it really starts being fun, they start sounding GOOD, and you will truly enjoy watching what happens to your child.
If we don't grow them here, then the high school will struggle to produce a musical, send kids to county and state competitions, etc.--all of those matter a great deal to the kids and their future college admissions officers (and financial aid officers when deciding who gets the scholarship). Not to mention school becomes a truly boring place to endure a lot of years.
Mr. Albright has been a true champion of our kids--and many have gone on to great success. Music is a vehicle for them to grow in ways they can't even imagine--and it lasts a lifetime. I've seen 80 year olds who play instruments, but not so many still playing lacrosse...

There seems to be plenty of money available for high stakes, standardized testing . . . millions of dollars are going into PARCC testing and preparation across the state. Why can't we find funding for programs that actually educate our children?

I really value the arts in school and especially the music teaching provided at Tracy's. I have enjoyed my granchildren's performance (Adam and Marco) over the years. Keep the music alive.
