Principal Mitchell,

We understand there may be a need to change traffic patterns and routines getting to Mary Lin during, and after, our school's renovation. Until a thoughtful and collaborative plan for getting students safely to school is developed between APS, City of Atlanta, the Mary Lin Community, and the neighborhoods impacted, PLEASE DON'T RELEASE THE VOLUNTEER CROSSING GUARDS on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013.

Candler Park Drive is a well-traveled route during rush hour and unsupervised crosswalks are unsafe, compared to ones with a crossing guard. Guards help minimize traffic disruptions and insure that everyone can cross between East and West sides of the street. Walkers, cyclists, and families will continue to use the crosswalk by the golf course to get to Mary Lin but it will not be as safe without a Crossing Guard.

The Mary Lin Community recruited the volunteer Crossing Guards as a way to solve a unique problem our neighborhood street configuration and Candler Park pose. That solution has served many families and commuters well for many years. If the crosswalk needs to be removed, then let's insure there is a safe alternative in place BEFORE making that change.

Please let the volunteer Crossing Guards help get our children safely to school each day.
