Wakefield Council will close Lightwaves Leisure Centre in the Summer of 2012 -when Sun Lane opens. The Sun Lane facility will offer new opportunities for swimming and fitness, but it can't house the range of other sports and activities that are taking place in Lightwaves.

Lightwaves' users, the local community, Wakefield College and Next Generation have therefore put together a bid, which has been submitted to the Council, to keep Lightwaves open as a community-run facility. The pool itself will close, but we will  develop plans to have 'extreme activities' in this part. If our bid is successful, we will use the 'dry side' of the building to offer a base for sport, leisure, social and much needed community activities, in partnership with the Council and other organisations.

2012 is the Olympic year with a focus on encouraging more young people to become actively involved in sport. By keeping Lightwaves open we want to ensure that future generations of Wakefield people will still have great sporting & leisure opportunities.

If you agree that Lightwaves is important and want to keep it open, we need you to register your support for our bid NOW as the Council will make a final decision in January 2012. Get in touch with Next Generation on 01924 302320 or e-mail nxtgen@wakefield.gov.uk for more information.

Please pass the message on to your friends and other potential users after you've registered your own support. We need as many people as possible to join our campaign to keep the lights on in Lightwaves for the next generation.
