Horses or livestock . Plus what you guys are failing to realise is the back country horsemen and other horse groups are the ones that are maintaining your trails

Requiring equestrians to bag and carry out manure is as ridiculous as it is unsafe. This undue burden would render all trails in the county off-limits to Equestrians, who often stewarded these trails for decades.

Only someone who has never owned a horse or lived on a farm could consider horses as "pets".

Please consider the group you will be alienating from these trails, for many reasons, but one reason that should appeal to most is the amount of time/money/resources/manpower that the Back country horsemen and other equine groups donate. Doing these changes hurts everyone, not just the equestrians. If these groups quit donating then many trails will suffer. And why would they donate to trails they will no longer use?
Thank you

Horses are wonderful animals but not pets. Their manure makes great organic compost and breaks down to nourish the earth. It doesn't need to be bagged and removed.

BCHW, Back Country Horsemen of Washington do hundreds of hours of volunteer work on trails. BCHW's commitment to improve trail maintenance and availability makes trails available to all. BCHW also has a public awareness campaign called Leave No Trace. This outreach has improved the removal of equestrian waste from public parking lots and other areas. Our horses are livestock - they do not live in our homes like dogs or cats. To change horses from the classification of livestock has huge taxation implications for horse breeders, horse boarding and horse businesses. Please understand that we want cleaner trails. This can be achieved by awareness and education.

I can not believe that someone would think that a horse is a dog!
So if horses do get reclassified as a pet, then will horses be able to fill in as "Service Animals" - not emotional support animals but a full fledged service animal to help owners move about, detect seizures and/or high sugar?
I find animals that consume animal protein for their source of nutrition have far more foul smelling output than a horse that only consumes plants!
I have a feeling that this proposal came from a Mountain bike club, who likely do not have the same outlook as other trail usrs.

Horses are livestock. Not pets. Manure is biodegradable and safe unlike pets who eat processed food horses diet is 100% forage and grain.

Why must city folks move out to the country then insist on bringing urban rules and sensibilities to their new rural home. Horse poop is fertilizer

My horse may be my pet but she's still livestock. Her manure is totally plant based and biodegrades quickly, unlike dog manure which is animal based.

If you're not pulling a plow with it or don't plan on eating it, it's a pet.
And your pet's poop stinks, so pick it up! Just like I pick up mine.
Used to be in this county that if you wanted to keep horses you bought enough land. You didn't expect the county to build you trails and you sure didn't think it was ok to put your horse in conflict with bicyclists.
What a bunch of spoiled brats. Waaa!

As a horse rider with dogs. There is no practical way to ride leashed or for always get the manure off the trail.

Surely, with input from the community more intelligent and reasonable answers to horse manure on trails can be addressed. All dogs not on leash should be under voice command, where ever they are. This is a separate issue from horse manure and trying to bundle it all with a reclassification is lazy and unreasonable.

I agree that equestrians dogs should be leashed as they cannot always control them from horseback. Bagging manure is ridiculous, horse manure is highly degradable and not a nuisance or full of bacteria like dog messes.
