There is still an important business link with Japan and I have met many English people with great interest in the Japanese culture. For those reasons the A level should continue.

Scrapping Japanese A-Level would be greatly detrimental to developing students' knowledge and understanding of a very different culture and language to their own. This could only be detrimental to their development and that of society as a whole.

Why must the British always lag behind the rest of the world in language skills? We should be proud of the multilngual competencies emerging in our big cities thanks to our ethnic minorities and use it as a spur to embrace more languages, not less, especially such a rich language as Japanese in which many of our young people have already invested. Bring the two nations nearer, teach Japanese!

Keep the Japanese A-Level. Education is not for profit!
We should continue to provide opportunity for our linguists to tackle difficult languages such as Japanese. To close down a route which offers so much by way of cultural, social and historical insight would be short-sighted to say the least. I understand the financial pressures but let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. We have much to learn from Japan and it would be a great pity if a hasty decision suggested we were only interested in engaging on our own terms.

I teach at an inner London comprehensive and our most able students take on Japanese in Year 9 as a second language. It is life-changing for them. Many students have visited Japan and broadened their horizons in a way that many wouldn't believe possible. Japanese A level must stay - in % terms it has the highest retention rate from GCSE of any A level at our school.
