As a former John Jay student, I believe that it's very important to prepare our community for the greater world beyond Westchester. Supporting the language program at JJMS/HS is the first step to doing that. Keep French classes!

French is an incredibly important and beautiful language that enriches students' historical, cultural, and political understanding as well as provides innumerable opportunities in all fields of life from academic to career-related, to personal. JJHS should definitely continue to offer French instead of cutting its already small language selection.

This district is narrowing and narrowing the opportunity of its students, first with the arts program and now this- why would you want to take away a valuable opportunity to learn a beautiful language. Although Spanish is more widely spoken, it doesn't make the French language any less important. Keep the French program. Stop taking away opportunities from the KLSD students.

As an alumni of JJHS and French student, I am very disheartened to hear this news. After the amazing experience I had as a French student of both Madame Kutcher and Radcliffe, I decided to continue my studies in university. Learning French has proven to be an incredibly meaningful skill in my life that I continue to use. Furthermore, French classes in high school were essentially the only classes where I learned basic English grammar... John Jay High School would be doing itself a horrible disservice by eliminating French from its academic programs.

JJHS needs to continue to offer French as part of its curriculum. It isn't a course in which you simply learn French vocabulary; it taught us all important speaking, listening, and communicating skills valuable in all subjects. Plus, it is taught by incredible teachers and offers amazing experiences like Quebec and the exchange program.

My kids take Spanish but I absolutely think French should also be part of the curriculum. I see no reason why it should be eliminated.

The fact that John Jay High School language options have been reduced to just French and Spanish in an era where globalization is the norm is bad enough. To think that what we regard as one of the best school districts in New York would offer only a single foreign language option -- regardless of what that language is -- is shameful.

Must keep French as an option! It was one of the most cumulative, collaborative and rewarding experiences of high school. I am able to navigate the language of so many countries and regions, and minor in French, and plan to work abroad in France.

French was my favorite class at John Jay since 7th grade, and is the reason why I continued my studies of French in college, and the reason why I plan to study abroad in France. It is so important and necessary to the John Jay curriculum!!!

As a 2014 JJHS alumnus with a francophone background, now studying in France at the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris as part of a dual degree program with Columbia University (NYC), I am personally affronted that the district would consider eliminating French language from the high school curriculum. Although I spoke French before coming to JJHS, it was in the JJHS French program, under the guidance of Mme. Henriette Kutscher, that I learned to write properly and eloquently in French; I would not be able to pursue my current studies in a French university, which offers me a unique and appealing international diploma, without this experience. As Wittgenstein said, "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." If Katonah-Lewisboro intends to offer the most comprehensive and enriching education to its students, it is essential that as many linguistic opportunities be offered to all students.

The John Jay French program was one of the best parts of my high school experience. We were given the opportunity to travel to Quebec, Montreal and Southern France and every one of those trips was an incredible and life changing adventure. Without the French program I wouldn't have been given the chance to immerse myself in the language and culture. I regularly share my experiences with the french program to professors and friends at college and it would be a real tragedy to cut the french department at John Jay High School.

In a period where being bilingual is one of the biggest draws, the thought of taking French and leaving only Spanish is upsetting and unjust.
