In 2010 the state of Wisconsin signed on to Common Core as a result of waivers for No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top money from the federal government. The standards were not written at the time. The legislature did not vote on these standards. District school boards did not vote on Common Core and parents were unaware of these standards being implemented. Although standards in education are needed, Common Core produces negative implications on principals, teachers, and students such as: • Common Core mandates to teachers exactly what and how they should teach • Assessments will force teachers to follow this mandate to the letter or they will suffer consequences • Performance of students on the Common Core standardized tests will impact pay and promotions for teachers • Teachers will not be allowed to individualize curriculum for their students • Teachers will not be able to be creative in how they teach the lessons • Teachers will be teaching to the standardized tests and not for the sake of education • Administrators will not be able to make decisions on curriculum based on their individual schools and student needs • Students will be treated collectively instead of as individuals We the undersigned do not want our district’s educational needs decided by politicians. We disagree with Common Core State Standards and do not want it in our district.
