This is appalling. I was a member of the baseball team and damn proud to be a Crusader. I spent my best years Clarke winning as a Crusader and it would be a crying shame to change the name. To what? The Clarke Universirty Saints or some generic no good crud like that? I won't stand for it. Not on my watch.

The university launched its current athletic graphic identity just nine years ago that included extensive consideration regarding the crusader name. At that time it was decided that the name should remain as is. While I understand and appreciate that the university is constantly evolving, I wonder why this specific topic is up for discussion after just nine years? I would challenge those who are pushing for this change to review the documentation from nine years ago to fully understand why students, faculty, staff and alumni sought to keep the crusaders as their athletic identity.

Changing the mascot would change the entire school. A crusader is someone who fights for what they believe in. I don't think it should be changed!!

Instead of worrying about how a small majority of people may off handly find the word "crusaders" to be dark and shameful, we should spend that time constructively looking on ways to improve things such as the outdated class rooms, dorms, and weight room.

It is incredibly ignorant to decide which part of history to acknowledge when it is convenient. This isn't just about a few people being offended. This is a time when solidarity with other traditions needs to be emphasized.

Mu freshman year was when they were creating the new logo and mascot. There was a chance for it to be changed from crusaders, but the name stuck. It is staying still.

I graduated in 2002 when Clarke was still Clarke College. Changing the name to University didn't affect my education or my identity as a Clarke alum. It made no difference. Getting rid of the Crusader mascot will make me more proud to be a Clarke graduate than I have ever been because it is taking a stand that proves the Clarke community is committed to its mission. I'd rather identify with an institution that stays true to its values than one that keeps a name for the sake of tradition. Context is everything. "Crusader" means something different now than it did ten years ago.
Also, many of the faculty that are invested in the mascot change are Clarke alumni and/or BVM's. In other words, their connection to the tradition is far deeper than their time as faculty.
