Student interest is lower than ever in the Corydon Central High School choir program. This is largely due to lack of funding and program changes that directly affect the students' experiences. In prior years, the show choir attended competitions, toured the elementary schools where they performed multiple routines, and more. After years of dedicated service to education, the current choir director is retiring. The last few years, he has not only been directing the high school and junior high choirs, but also teaching elementary music at two schools. This limited the high school to one choir and had a dramatic impact on how many after-school activities they could do. The students no longer attend competitions and there is only one short routine. For the teens, it's the equivalent of a basketball team being disallowed from playing games. The morale has been severely damaged. Choir is good for kids! Studies show that students who are involved in high quality school music programs score higher in math and english and on their SATs. It is also known that students who participate in an extracurricular activity, such as choir, are more likely to graduate and have better school attendance. While it is a matter of discussion, the school board has not stated a decision to continue the choir. We believe that with proper funding and attention for the program, student interest would again soar, and as a result, their education cultivated. Please sign our petition urging the school board to not only keep the choir, but to provide proper staffing and funding for the program to allow students a full experience.
