Petition to Retain Chinese Language Classes at West High School
To the Administration, School Board, and Decision-Making Committee:
We, the undersigned students of [School Name], respectfully urge you to reconsider any plans to eliminate Chinese language classes from our curriculum. We believe that maintaining Chinese instruction is essential to providing a comprehensive, future-focused education that prepares us to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.
1. Chinese Is a Globally Important Language
Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken language in the world, with over one billion native speakers. China plays a critical role in the global economy, international politics, and technological innovation. As students preparing for college, careers, and global citizenship, we view Chinese as an invaluable skill that will enhance our future opportunities in countless fields—from international business and science to government and cultural exchange.
2. Language Learning Enhances Cognitive and Academic Development
Numerous studies show that learning Chinese strengthens memory, improves visual-spatial skills, and supports academic achievement in areas such as math and critical thinking. Unlike alphabet-based languages, Chinese requires the use of different cognitive processes that help students become more flexible and analytical thinkers. Removing this language deprives students of these unique learning benefits.
3. Cultural Understanding Is a Vital Part of 21st-Century Education
Studying a language also means studying a culture. Chinese class is one of the few places where students at our school engage deeply with non-Western traditions, literature, philosophy, and history. I’m not just a concerned parent, but as someone who has seen the incredible impact of the Chinese program at West High. This class has opened doors for language learning, cultural understanding, and personal growth. Ms. Luo has played a vital role in helping both of my children connect to their heritage and discover new interests. Her dedication has made a meaningful difference in kids' lives. Taking this program away would be a huge loss not only for my family but for so many students who benefit from this unique opportunity. My children have been taking Chinese for ages. I know friends and people who are coming to west that want to take Chinese. Taking this language out of the curriculum of west deprives people a critical language they wanna learn. Keep Chinese at west.

I am goin to be a future 7th grader in West. One of the benefits that I thought of West is the chinese program. I’ve been looking forward to the program until I recently found out that the chinese program will be canceled. I am deeply sad. I hope something will fix this!
