I am a West high alum who is now a professor at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. Language learning is one of the most important things we can teach. It not only improves Our intellectual abilities, but allows us to communicate with people and learn about other cultures. Please do not do an enormous disservice to the school and the world by cutting this program.

I believe this program offers opportunities for culture exchange. Especially with today’s political climate.

West High 2005 graduate here. I remember hearing about the Chinese language program at West starting shortly after I went off to college. I was jealous I never had the opportunity to take these classes in high school.
What an opportunity it is for students to learn Mandarin! Language is such a great way to build bridges between cultures. Please continue this vital program at a time when cultural understanding is most needed!

My two children graduated from West High. They took Chinese classes for AP and IB all the time. They learned how to write an essay in Chinese. That’s a big benefit for them. West High is one of the best schools in Salt Lake. We’d like West to keep this program and benefit more students.

Emmy Luo is the most skilled and supportive teacher I was lucky to have at West. Her hands on support changed my life, creating opportunities for me to study in China with a US gov scholarship and started a life long study of Chinese that took me to NYU Shanghai and beyond. She is single handedly responsible for opening my eyes to the world and helping me live up to my full potential. Her program is invaluable to West High students and I know is part of what makes students from West compelling to higher education institutions. She deserves to reach her pension status but also west high students deserve her instruction, attention, skill and compassion.

I am a WHS alumni, and hope the program continues to enrich lives and bridge gaps. This is how we create future leaders and peacemakers, while securing diversity and freedom of choice in education!
