Chick-Fil-A is a privately owned company that has a presence on campus at Wichita State University. The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in their restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. As a student, alumni or concerned citizen, I value my right to free speech. Wichita State University's mission statement includes the following: "Wichita State University is committed to providing comprehensive educational opportunities in an urban setting. Wichita State University pursues its mission utilizing the human diversity of Wichita, the state's largest metropolitan community, and its many cultural, economic and social resources." Chick-fil-A is one of many choices on campus to dine. As students, we are encouraged to use our own initiative and education to critically think about the events of the day. As this controversy has come about, I have analyzed the issues and concerns voiced by those in support of and those opposed to this establishment. While I make no statements in support or in opposition of the topic of traditional marriage, I believe both sides of the argument have the right to freely express themselves and neither should be penalized for exercising its freedom of speech. Removing Chick-fil-A from WSU would be punishing the establishment because of intolerance to opposing points of view. By signing this petition, I am asking that WSU keep Chick-fil-A on campus and set an example of tolerance of all points of view!
