Karuk Tribe: Please Change your Policy around Children in the Work Place

I am a Karuk tribal member and a Karuk Tribal employee and mother of 3. I couldn't even consider working for my own tribe until my children were older and weaned because of this policy. I worked for the Yurok tribe until then. The pandemic only complicated issues. We have such a shortage of people who can work and many of the most motivated workers want to be here to benefit the community for these upcoming generations. Allow these children to be loved, by their family but also by their community, support these families. Yoovta.

Non-tribal, son is a Karuk member. Separating family from work life is a colonial/western process that doesn't affirm the needs of families and children especially in areas that lack childcare. Supporting breast and chest feeding is especially essential to the health of young ones .

I am a karuk descendent, advocating for fellow mothers. Several quality employees who were making significant contributions to the betterment of our people had to leave their positions due to lack of support and childcare options. The heart of our culture is in rural areas were practices are still kept, yet resources are centered in developed urban areas rather than where they are needed most. Please consider expanding childcare options and infant in the workplace agreements

I am a Karuk Tribal member who lives in Orleans and has chosen to work for the Yurok Tribe for the last 18 years. One of my deciding factors is due to the children in the workplace policy. I had 5 children at work with me for their first year of life. I didn’t have to choose between bonding with my new child or keeping my job. I am a professional and successful employee with years of experience and dedication to my job because my employer has always given me the flexibility to be successful as a parent as well. I fully believe the Karuk Tribe would benefit from following suit with other local employers and allowing children in the workplace. Let parents bond and raise their babies while they work just as we would have done traditionally as Karuk people.
