I am a mothe of adult kids, who go to Kartel sometimes. I am always know they're going to be safer here than anywhere on the Prince of Wales Road - the violence on this road is never out of the local press. It's important that there is a choice not to go there. Kartel has always felt a safe place for them.

I've worked in bars across the city for years, and have a good grasp on what makes a safe and reputable establishment from both sides of the bar. I would consider Kartel to be both of these things. It's an asset to Norwich. As a punter, I have often felt threatened in many of the bars and clubs down the Prince of Wales Road. I have never felt that way on the Kartel premises. The staff are very clued in and on the ball and have been quick to effectively deal with any problems on the rate occasions situations have arisen. Under all the terms that I have enjoyed Kartel- as a student, an industry worker, a woman and a paying customer- Kartel is a place I have come back to again and again.

The question isn't whether Kartel is the safest, most loved and socially responsible club in the city and it isn’t whether it should close at 3am or 4am or even 6am..… This issue runs deeper than that. The question is whether the police have the physical ability/can be arsed to cover more than one street on a Friday or Saturday night (Kartel is at the top of POW road after all), whether the council has the intellectual aptitude to deduce that having lots of drunk people on one street at the same time is generally not a good idea and the battle against the general close minded, short sighted and ignorant attitude of all involved in this decision making process. Kartel, previously Havana, has been targeted since day one as it dared to be different… dared to give the non-moronic folks of Norwich a different experience of nightlife away from the horrific sights, sounds and dam right grotesque human behaviour on display on Prince of Wales Road and has done so successfully for nearly 6 years. If this persecution continues Norwich will not only lose a truly unique, musically and evolutionary progressive night spot, but looking at the bigger picture, it will unfortunately prove itself to be the socially regressive and backward city it is unfortunately perceived to be.

Jo Baxter put it very very well. I am not from Norwich, but every time I am in the city, I head straight there to perform, monthly. There has never been anything but good stories, good atmosphere and above all GOOD PEOPLE! Any council or authoritative voice that takes an easy way out avoiding trouble, is weak and needs to be replaced. The problem is NOT venue specific. The problem lies in the council and police force who are unable to protect their civilians. The real solution is to vote in a power that is stronger, more organised, and willing to tackle the real problems that plague every city in the country: ignorance. Intelligence is beauty, equality and above all = peace. Unity is the answer, not segregation and upset. Get your act together at city hall, and start addressing the elephant in the room; your ignorance.

Kartel being open late is not the problem it's a place for people to go where they haven't finished there evening if you close it then there may end up with people loitering more on the streets as they will want to keep the party going. If you close kartel then you will end up with people possibly getting more drunk as they know they've only got until 3ish to get the drinks in. Also by forcing kartel to close early could massively reduce there profit and could even force the closure of the club due to this.

I am a doctor who trained and works locally. Kartel is a venue that fulfills a role in Norwichs night life. Shorter drinking times means quicker consumption and inevitably produces more drunk people who sadly are violent and or a strain on our health services. Kartel in my experience is a friendly safe environment.

kartel is basically a norwich institution. as much a part of the city as colmans mustard or the puppet theatre.

I am a regular visitor to Kartel club, as well as a personal licence holder and designated premises supervisor. I have complete belief that this club is run well, safely and in a fit and proper manner. At no time have I ever considered the venue to be troublesome or unsafe. I urge the licensing committee and police to reinstate the 4am licence immediately, and to seek ways to assist a professionally run venue to deal with an issues it may have rather than reducing its licencable hours. The gesture of a reduction in licence will not have any positive impact on any issues that may already be in place and will actually only serve to flood the streets of norwich with more revellers at a time when the streets, public services, the police and transport are already stretched.

Kartel provides a safe and friendly environment where you can end your night out. It Is away from the hectic scene of prince of wales road and its really well located next to the taxi ranks where there are always taxis to get people home when kartel closes, because having kartel open late, means that the demand for taxis isnt as high as it is at 3am, meaning intoxicated and vulnerable people are not walking home seperated from their friend groups. I have been going to kartels and previously havanas almost every weekend and have never witnessed any trouble and normally well staffed by security.

Kartel has been a home to be for the past 3 years and now that i am not working there any longer, it is still one of the only places left in the city with a decent night on. Very rare to see any uncontrolled violence up that end of the city. Howere, the Prince of Wales road had numerous outbursts of havoc on a regular basis.

It seems to me that the closing time isn't the real issue. Norwich city council along with norfolk police seem to think that keeping all club goers on one street in Norwich us the answer. Clearly they don't have the first clue about what makes a safe night out.

its like everyone is saying, its a place where many people feel safe and enjoy coming to to socialise, have fun and listen to good music. why because of a few people do the rest have to suffer. if this happens then in my opinion, it will be the WRONG decision.
Love this place
