Johnson Williams Middle School (JWMS) students should be permitted to select Art as a full-year elective. Currently, band and chorus are available as full year electives, but Art is not. This is inherently inequitable. Many of our students are extraordinarily talented in the visual arts and are already showing interest in art-based careers. Furthermore, studies show that art is a vital component for student development, allowing the brain to reach its full ability not only in artistic outlets but also in other academic subjects. We, the undersigned, are concerned students, parents, teachers, and other citizens of Clarke County who urge the JWMS administration to reinstate full year art classes for the 2013-2014 school year and permanently thereafter.
