To all Concerned: • Govenor Tim Kaine • Commissioner of Social Services, Rita Katzman • Director for Social Services for VA, Tony Fritz • Mary Norris • Supervisor for Floyd Co., VA, Carl Ayers The purpose of this letter/packet of information is to assist in the proper and thorough investigation and prosecution of all responsible parties, in the case of three and a half year old Sean Thomas Daniel Poff, or as he has always been called by me and those who know him as Daniel. Daniel came to live with my wife and I, along with three other children, when he was approximately two days old and he and I instantly bonded, however about two years later my wife and I separated due to marital difficulties compounded by the drug and alcohol abuse of my wife Shena Poff. My wife and I separated around the date of 01/31/07. During this time of separation, both past and present, I became increasingly aware of the growing drug and alcohol problem that was beginning to make more and more of a negative impact on all the children. I began to make calls to the department of Social Services with little or often no response. These complaints by me were in reference to numerous problems in the residences of Shena Poff, including but not limited to exposure to pornography, drugs, alcohol, lack of supervision, squalid living conditions and so on. The problems continued and on 08/24/09 Daniel nearly burned to death. The two step-brothers who were present (no adults) are in fact of questionable ability under the department of Child Protective Services own guidelines due to current and ongoing behavioral and disciplinary problems both at home and school; including truancy, violent behavior, and in the case of one brother a very apparent drug abuse problem. They are in fact both currently receiving counseling for some of these very issues prior to being left to care for the three and a half year old Daniel. Since the incident with Daniel, there are still not only growing concerns but further information surfacing that indicate the continued danger of any child left in the fore mentioned residence of Shena Poff. I have recently obtained temporary primary physical custody of one of the children, Summer Poff and I am gravely concerned for the safety and environment for any child at that home, in particular the three and a half year old Daniel since he may likely be leaving the hospital before a court date can be obtained to inhibit his return to the same environment and at the same time will be receiving pain medication surrounded by numerous persons well known in this area to suffer an addiction to this very type of drugs as well as other drugs. It is imperative that all persons involved in this case respond with the utmost urgency so that hopefully there will be no more near death cases for me to call upon you for help.
