Justice for Leighton Taylor

I respectfully submit this statement in support of a request for clemency, not only as a personal appeal but as a broader call for justice and equality. Clemency is not just an act of mercy; it is an opportunity for our legal system to reflect its deepest values — fairness, compassion, and the belief in second chances.
Leighton Taylor has served two years and during that time he has demonstrated growth, accountability, and a sincere commitment to becoming a better individual. While the sentence imposed was legal, it is essential to ask whether it was just. Justice must not only be about punishment — it must also be about restoration.
We live in a country that believes in redemption, yet too often our justice system disproportionately affects marginalized communities. Granting clemency in this case would not only correct a personal injustice but also stand as a symbol of our shared humanity — that we believe in rehabilitation, that we believe in equity, and that no one is defined solely by their worst moment.
Leighton Taylor is no longer the person he was at the time of the offense. He has taken full responsibility, have worked to heal, and now prepared to contribute positively to his community. Clemency would allow him to continue that journey, not behind bars, but in the world — as a citizen, a parent, a provider, and a living example of what true justice can look like.
I urge you to consider this request with the knowledge that justice must be fair, and equality means giving every person the dignity of hope. Clemency is not a weakness in the law — it is the highest expression of its strength.
Sincerely,
Brittany Kincey
