On August 17th 2013 Islan Nettles Was beaten into a coma and later died following an altercation on the street with Paris Wilson which was eventually broken up by the police.
According to reports, Islan Nettles was out in New York City with friends when a group of young learned she was a transgender woman they began taunting and maliciously beating her right in front of a police precinct in Harlem..Witnesses alleged that Paris Wilson 21, continued hitting her as he hurled trans-phobic and homophobic slurs at her and didn't stop until he was pulled off of Islan Nettles by police . The attack ultimately resulted in her death in the hospital days later. Judge Steven Statsinger announced that the charges of Misdemeanor assault against Wilson would be dropped as the prosecution didn't have clear evidence that Wilson was the man who had committed the crime. despite the fact that there were several witnesses and 10 surveillance cameras at the scene, with multiple people identifying Wilson as the perpetrator. Still, this wasn't enough for Judge Statsinger and prosecutors.
