Proclamation: June is for the Sacred Heart
Dear Governor Landry,
We respectfully ask that you proclaim the month of June as the “Month of the Sacred Heart” in the State of Louisiana.
From her earliest days, Louisiana has been shaped by a distinct and enduring Catholic heritage. The colony founded under the patronage of King Louis XIV was consecrated in honor of Our Lord, and Catholic missionaries accompanied explorers along the Mississippi River, establishing parishes and schools that became the spiritual and cultural foundations of our state. Figures such as the Venerable Henriette DeLille and the missionary clergy who served in New Orleans and the rural parishes of Acadiana embodied a faith that formed generations of Louisianians.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus—symbolizing Christ’s mercy, charity, and sacrificial love—has long held a cherished place in Catholic life, especially in French and Creole communities that shaped Louisiana’s identity. June, traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart, provides an opportunity to recognize the profound role that faith has played in our state’s history, culture, and public life.
Such a proclamation would honor Louisiana’s historic roots, acknowledge the contributions of her Catholic citizens past and present, and encourage reflection on the virtues of charity, fidelity, and devotion to the common good.
With gratitude for your service to our state, we respectfully submit this request.
