Petition to Oppose the Privatization of Jamestown’s Water Plant Operations
To: The Jamestown Town Council and Public Works Department
We, the undersigned residents of Jamestown, stand in opposition to the proposed privatization of the Jamestown Water Plant operations.
WHEREAS:
1. Privatization Risks Higher Costs and Reduced Transparency:
• Privatizing plant operations often prioritizes profits over long-term investment, resulting in increased costs for residents and diminished accountability.
2. Staffing Challenges Were Predictable and Preventable:
• The operator shortage is a well-known industry challenge that could have been mitigated through proactive measures, such as offering competitive salaries, supporting operator licensing, and building a local talent pipeline.
• Delays in hiring and inadequate support for training have exacerbated the current staffing crisis.
3. Privatization Undermines Union Jobs and Local Control:
• The town’s plan would result in a net loss of three union positions, weakening the collective bargaining power of local workers.
• Outsourcing operations removes critical infrastructure from direct public oversight, jeopardizing the quality and reliability of water services.
4. There Are Better Solutions:
• The town can stabilize operations and address staffing issues internally by:
• Supporting the current Plant Operator in obtaining required licenses.
• Offering competitive salaries and benefits to attract qualified staff.
• Building partnerships with local schools to create a sustainable talent pipeline.
• Engaging temporary licensed operators or consultants to provide immediate relief.
We believe:
• Privatization is not a sustainable or effective solution for addressing Jamestown’s water plant staffing crisis.
• The town should focus on resolving management and staffing issues internally to ensure long-term service quality, accountability, and transparency.
We call on the Town Council and Public Works Department to:
1. Commit to keeping Jamestown’s water plant operations under public control.
2. Implement the proposed solutions to address staffing and management challenges without resorting to privatization.
3. Rebuild trust with staff and residents by prioritizing transparency, collaboration, and accountability in decision-making.
By signing this petition, we urge you to take immediate action to protect Jamestown’s water plant from privatization and invest in sustainable, community-centered solutions for its future.
