To whom it may concern: we, the students, staff, and community members of Johns Hopkins University would like to make known our desire for a formal Theatre Arts and Studies Major to be established at Johns Hopkins. This would represent a major push towards opening Johns Hopkins up to a wider array of students, as well as provide the opportunity for current students to pursue their theatrical passions at an official capacity. As the Theatre Arts and Studies department already exists at JHU, this would not require additional funding, courses, professors, or resources of any kind, but simply be the formal establishment of a discipline for which the school has had the means to create for many years. With the recent creation of the John Astin Faculty Teaching Fund, intended to set up a Theatre Arts faculty position in John’s name, the resources required for a theatre major will remain within reach for years to come, and all that needs to be done is submit a proposal. The following represents a list of students, staff, and other members of the Hopkins community who feel strongly that the inclusion of a Theatre Major at Hopkins would be beneficial, productive, and crucial to furthering the importance of the arts at Hopkins. We hope you’ll take these many voices into consideration when making a formal decision on this matter.

I have been hearing from so many of you about how vital this major is to your future here. My conversations with department faculty are moving forward because they are finally seeing how many students genuinely care about this path.

Seeing this level of support confirms that my peers feel the exact same disconnect I have lived with for years. It is incredibly validating to know that so many others see the potential for a formal theatre major as clearly as I do.

Honestly it is embarrassing that a school like Hopkins doesn't offer this already. We have the classes and the faculty so why are we still wasting time? Just give us the major!

As a member of JHU class of '83, and a former longstanding member of the Barnstormers and Theatre Hopkins, the theatre experience I acquired through these organizations have benefited me as the basis to becoming one of thre metropolitan areas most award and most in demand directors as well as a successful producer, designer, and performer. And that was with zero resources other than those I could find on my own through the Barnstormers and Mrs. Laurlene Pratt. Now you have everything to share with students. Make it official and show your commitment to the arts as I have from being a Hopkins student. My independent theatrical study time at JHU helped make me the successful artist I have become today.

This is my intended career and it would mean the world to be able to graduate from such a prestigious university with a Theatre Major.

This is an outrage! An flippin outrage! How is Bio Medical-Engineering a major but Theater is not a major? What is Hopkins, a school for people who are wrong all the time about what should be a major and what should not be? If you do not change this immediately, and I mean flipping immediately, Usman Enam will have a great many things to say to you and you will not like it or not what he has said IN THE PAST! Refresh now! Fix it or watch the school fall in the decay of not having arts! Yes!

How is biomedical engineering a flipping major and not theater? Nick Scandura will have many things to say to you if this does not become a reality. Refresh! Fix it! Yes!

When we start to neglect the liberal arts in favor of the sciences is when we start to say that economic growth is more important than creative expression. I believe theatre arts should be a major because there is already a lack of emphasis on the humanities at Hopkins.

This is a persuasive argument and I support it.
