(French will follow) We, the under signed, condemn the demolition of yet another relic and symbol of our history and culture with great deal of dismay and sadness. The Jesuit Garden located in Getawi, Achrafieh, Lebanon has a historic and archaeological value and we demand its preservation. The garden was built in the 19th century by the Jesuit missionaries and archeological traces of a sacred temple still exist at the centre of the premises. The garden contains a public library and a recreational centre for the citizens and a playground for children of the neighbourhood. We are on the verge of witnessing yet another destruction of our heritage and another obliteration of our history. We consider this destruction an extension of a systematic and relentless aggression against our urban society and our historic heritage. We see the preservation of the garden as a symbol of resistance to a savage and uncontrollable development attitude held by governmental officials and greedy developers. The government and the developers have failed to consider the real value of such a monument beyond the short sightedness of its financial gain. Today, we are witnessing the mindless changes of our city and the relentless attempt to deprive all Lebanese citizens of their public spaces. The destruction at the Jesuit Garden is a precursor to more assault to come to the rest of our public spaces. Today is the destruction of the Jesuit Garden, tomorrow is the Sanaii3 garden and the then is Beirut Forest, (Hourch Beirut). We call on all concerned groups, humanitarian organizations and citizen to join us in this crucial and important battle to save what little is left of the dignity in the heritage of our Lebanon. -------------------- Nous, les soussignés, condamnons, avec tristesse et consternation, la destruction d’un vestige de plus, témoin de notre passé et de notre culture. Le jardin des jésuites, dans le quartier de Geitaoui, à Beyrouth, Liban, revêt une valeur historique et archéologique. Nous en exigeons la préservation. Ce jardin a été créé au 19e siècle par les missionnaires jésuites; les restes d’un édifice sacré peuvent être vus au centre du jardin. On y trouve aussi une bibliothèque publique et un centre de loisirs pour les citoyens ainsi qu’une aire de jeux pour les enfants du quartier. Une fois encore, nous sommes sur le point d’assister à la disparition de notre patrimoine et à l’anéantissement de notre histoire. Il s’agit d’un exemple de plus de l’agression implacable et systématique à laquelle sont soumis notre société urbaine et notre patrimoine historique. La préservation du jardin est le symbole de la résistance à un modèle de développement sauvage et effréné prôné par les pouvoirs publics et des promoteurs cupides. Aveuglés par la possibilité d’un gain monétaire à court terme, ceux-ci ont délibérément refusé de tenir compte de la valeur véritable du lieu. Aujourd’hui, nous constatons la transformation irresponsable de notre ville et les tentatives inlassables pour priver les citoyens libanais de leurs espaces publics. La destruction du jardin des jésuites est le signe avant-coureur d’une offensive prochaine contre les autres espaces publics : aujourd’hui, le jardin des jésuites, demain, celui des arts et métiers, après-demain, la pinède de Beyrouth. Nous invitons tous les groupements, organisations humanitaires et citoyens concernés à se joindre à nous dans cette bataille cruciale pour sauvegarder la dignité et le patrimoine de notre Liban.
