JCU Uni Club - Bring back Thursday Nights!
Uni club Thursdays are iconic! I don't believe punishing the entire student population for the trouble caused by a few is fair. I also don't think the University should be dictating to us what to do. We are not buying from the kids menu at JCU, we pay full price, and we expect the full Uni experience! I am aware of the issues JCU has and I recognise that something needed to be done, something more than shutting the doors!
Connor (President) Ollie (Cairns Campus Officer) and I worked most of January to put together a campus wide, Anti-Social Behaviour and Violence policy. The three main angles of the policy are:
The Club - Improved RSA and Security procedures – Banning problem patrons – working with police and liquor licensing – Aligned with the Safe Night Out policy
JCU - Collaboration between JCU security and club security – removing intoxicated or violent patrons – bigger presence
The Students - Education campaign targeting binge drinking, violence and anti-social behaviour – peer pressure against undesirable behaviour.
We presented this policy at the first student association council of 2014, then to the Vice-Chancellor, and finally to the Attorney General of Queensland. At all these presentations we were commended for our work, with the AG meeting being a stand-out in that our policy is remarkably similar to the new Safe Night Out policy that has recently been adopted by the Queensland Government.
The work we have done all year has gained traction with most key stakeholders. Liquor Licensing and Queensland police are saying we have the best RSA practices and the safest venue in Townsville. The final point of resistance is JCU…
