The local council just confirmed that the urban garden project for our neighborhood has received full funding. My students worked so hard to prove that our community deserves better food access and seeing their effort pay off is overwhelming. I am proud of what we achieved together and we will …

Dear Families and Friends of MS358,

In our PBL Unit#2 for 6th Grade we looked at the issue of food insecurities in Jamaica, Queens. Students discovered the causes of food insecurities and also discovered that there are very few healthy restaurants to choose from in their community. Students also looked at urban farming as a way to address the issues of healthy food options. In advisory 6th Grade students wrote letters to a local politician and we will be sending a few letters with our digital petition log.

Seeing two hundred and fifty signatures for our neighborhood is overwhelming because these kids deserve a future where they have access to real food right outside their doorstep. Reading through the comments has been an emotional experience for all of us as we realize how many of you share this same hunger for change.

Seeing one hundred people back our students feels incredible. My own kids are part of this movement and they are buzzing with excitement to see their hard work acknowledged by so many neighbors.

Students need and deserve healthy food options. If we are to keep our promise to them to prepare them to be our future leaders, then that begins with healthier food in their neighborhood. #IStandForTheStudents

One day morning in one of those restaurants I was served with a spoiled fast food. I was pretty sure the food was prepared at least a day ago. I returned the food but the waiter was pleading in favor of that. I could do nothing against that because of number of reasons. Any way, I am so proud of our little but conscious children. Thanks a lot to them.
