I go to Fraser every couple of years with the boys & we always give the backpackers a wide berth on the beach because they are unpredictable. Its a shame that something that fantastic (Fraser) is being destroyed by backpackers

Very important that something is done. I have spent many hours being a passenger 4wdriver & i am in my 40s but i would still not b game to drive one on a beach. It is such a shame that these young kids can have access to this without knowledge to do it safely. Besides the tragic loses there is also the issue of ruining our beautiful Island for Australians to enjoy.

Very important that something is done. I have spent many hours being a passenger 4wdriver & i am in my 40s but i would still not b game to drive one on a beach. It is such a shame that these young kids can have access to this without knowledge to do it safely. Besides the tragic loses there is also the issue of ruining our beautiful Island for Australians to enjoy.

This safety issue needs goes further than tagalong tours. I have just spent 8 days on Fraser Island in Jan and completed several rescues from a simple wrong tyre pressures to watching snatch straps on towballs - a tragedy waiting to happen. In every instance the driver had a hire vehicle with what amounted to no more than inadequate instructions or training. The driver hasd inadequate experience to be there in the first place and had no knowledge of some of the dangers of sand driving. One guy after I snatched him out of a bog proceeded down the beach and began doing donuts in the sand. I was waiting to see an overturned vehicle on the back of this stupidity. Again a hire vehicle and inexperienced driver. In another isolated rescue, a hire vehicle equipted with a CB radio that did not work was lucky I happened upon these people. They had ben in Australia 2 days and set of on one of the most difficult drives across the island without any training and were stuck half way. I dismissed each rescue as one 4WDer helping out another however it is now clear to me the whole 4WD hire industry need a shakup. Jades Law - fully support the petition. To her parents sincere condolences for your loss. Yes this could have and should have been prevented. Let's hope this petition will force change.
