I strongly agree with this, I have family in the traveller community along with having heritage in the traveller community aswel. and I agree that they should be reconsidered and they should be entitled to more than they are given. They are people like us and should be treated fairly and have more rights to education, the way they live. The more oppurtunity's they are given the more they can give back. Without the opportunity's what else can be offered? You have to give to receive and they deserve the same. If refugees can be given more that aren't even from Ireland then why can't Irish travelers, or even English travelers. Even the homeless deserve a better chance. The government has the power to do so. If they just take the time to see the greatness in the traveler community they will see the positivity they offer. I am 21 years of age and I think its time to change things. To The Irish government its your time to change things. Make the right decision and help!

Glad to sign this. Travellers are discriminated against in so many ways.

Suzanne Gallagher

Inspired to sign and share this after seeing the ignorance of Ryan Tubridy and the bravery of John Connors on display during that late late interview.

Fiona Murphy

Well done John Connors on Late Late show - inspiring, passionate and refreshing.

lisa markey

Well done John standing up for the Traveller community.

Brendan Woolsey

As we welcome people's from distant lands to this country we should not forget to make some of our own people feel more welcome.

Con Creedon

Diversity and Equality need not be wholly mutually exclusive.

John O Sullivan

Recognition of Travellers as an ethnic minority by the Irish Government is long, long overdue and they are fully entitled & deserving of it. Some Traveller children went to the same primary school as myself & I well remember their sense of fun & the innate dignity they displayed in trying to cope with the 'system' preferring to look on them as outsiders. Those children deserved far better than that - and so do the Travellers of today.

Sean McEntegart

Has to happen!

Annemarie McDonagh

We are a long time waiting for the recognition of our ethnicity. We as Travelers want to claim something that is our culture, our identity a open door for our children to access freely, availability without having to knock to many times and no answers.

Paul O Connor

Non-Traveller supporting full recognition of Traveller ethnicity and a future where richness of diversity is valued and protected.

James O'Riordan

I think travellers have a distinct way of life & culture and this diversity should be celebrated. This would be the best reaction to the insular inward-looking rhetoric of people like Trump & Farage.

Having been evicted ten times in the l960s and acted as chairman of the Cherry Orchard Camp committee, and in recent years helped defend Dale Farm during an assault by taser-armed Essex riot police, I believe I have seen and experienced the worst. Recognition as a distinct ethnic people would help Pavees to come nearer to equal status. Remember too we are part of the larger movement of Roma and Pavees across Europe, together numbering 12 million, so hardly a "minority" but rather a nation on the move - moving towards full status, full rights and fuller lives.

Apel / Roma Integration Association 17.04.2014 National Coordinator Stelian Ciuciu mack APPEAL to ; Recognise Traveller Ethnicity Roma Integration Association (RIA ) is calling on the Irish Government to recognise Travellers as an ethnic minority group. Catherine Joyce, chair of the ITM said: “Ethnic status would provide greater protection of Travellers cultural independence under law. This would include official recognition of Traveller culture in the provision of housing, education, health services. For example, nomadism would have to be properly catered for in housing provision. It also would have implications in terms of ensuring Traveller representation in the political system. Furthermore, there is also an important symbolic meaning of Traveller Culture becoming validated as both distinct and valued within Irish society.” Niall Crowley, CEO of the Equality Authority, said the Authority would sign the Irish Traveller Movement’s petition and added that "the definition of Travellers needs to be more widely articulated in national policy and programmes if Travellers are to achieve full equality in practice across all areas of policy and provision." Amnesty International also agreed to sign the petition and promote it. Executive Director of Amnesty International’s Irish Section Colm O’Gorman said: "Amnesty International fully endorses this petition and we urge our members and supporters to join the campaign". The Director of the National Consultative Committee in Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) Phillip Watt said: “The NCCRI is disappointed that the Government does not explicitly recognise Travellers as an ethnic group and will sign this petition to help highlight the issue.”Recognition of Traveller Ethnicity would:
