I work at a Vancouver-based tech company that has not paid 400 of its North American employees since May. There are 1600 more in China waiting for their paycheques. It is called Istuary Innovation Group.
The CEO, Ethan Sun, established the company in Vancouver in 2013. Within 4 years, he was able to secure sufficient funding to expand it to a company with 1800+ employees globally, who were working in 20+ offices across North American in China.
On June 15th, Ethan Sun claimed that we are encountering a cash flow shortage because he is working on a acquisition of company in China. Upon completion of the deal, he would be able to pay us. Initially, He said paycheck will be issued in couple of weeks but that did not happen. On June 30, he sent another email promising that all pay dues will be settled by July 31. He also said employees who stay with company and did not sue the company will receive additional 5% bonus. but we were not paid on july 31st. We were said that Company is going to get lot bigger and stronger after acquisition is complete. All employees who choose to remain with the company will get rewards and career growth.
We understand, Startups go through periods of financial difficulties, But what put us in this situation is lack of transparency from management and false hopes provided by CEO, Ethan Sun and CFO, Brian Chen. They have purposefully hidden facts about the company's financial situation to keep the employees from leaving and sue the company.
Few of us filed complaint with Labour standards branch to get relief by end of June and We haven't heard positive resolution from them yet. We were shocked to see Employment laws in Developed countries like Canada let Employer walk free without paying employees for four months. There seems to be no consequences for Ethan Sun for all the trouble caused to the employees.
Since August 31, we have not heard from the CEO nor the CFO, leaving many of us jobless, at the mercy of EI. Disgruntled, we are on a quest to address this issue to the media and government.

I am truly overwhelmed by the momentum this is gathering because I never imagined so many people would join in when I first hit publish. This is entirely due to your willingness to speak up for those of us who have been waiting so long for what we are owed. I am just a person who wanted to be heard and you are the ones turning that hope into something real.

I can't imagine who would let us work while knowing there was no $$ to pay us and only informing us a few days before pay date. I suspect the cash must have been there, before it was steered away for other (ventures?). That was our money. That's not right!
Ethan made lot of illegal operations. If you see that it will be a problem to pay, close the office. He knew that it is impossible to find funds to pay several millions of $ per months. I think that in such situation, where about 300 families were deceived and robbed by thousands of $, he should be punished significantly (like prison for 25 years). This punishment at least will prevent future situation where the new schemer would think to get richer in this way.
It's sad to see the whole thing ends in this way. Lack of competence and responsibility from the founder was the root cause. Now he should come out and be a man, try to resolve this. If there is no money left, at least be honest & courageous to tell the employees; If there is still money available, it's the right thing to pay people what has been owed based on employment contracts. Integrity matters.
I worked for istuary for 2 years, it was a promising platform when I started, I enjoyed working with so many talented people. Together we did achieved something great. It is sad to see istuary ends this way due to bad management and chaotic finance. I understand start up is not easy. Hope the management get a good lesson out of it.

I personally know many excellent engineers who took a chance and worked for this startup. They had no idea this would happen to them and was just doing real engineering work in hopes to make a great product. Please pay these people what you owe them!!

The Canadian government must uphold the laws of Canada and ensure that all employees of Istuary Innovation Group are paid promptly and in full by seizing and selling all assets of its CEO and co-owner Yian "Ethan" Sun and his wife and co-owner Yulan "Amy" Hu. They allegedly used investors' money to purchase real estate in Metro Vancouver and to "pay and maintain their personal lifestyles" instead of paying their hundreds of workers in North America and many more in China.
