Irving Street, east of South Jessup Street, has been in the public domain for nearly 200 years. Together with South Jessup Street, they constitute one of the most unique and charming intersections for small historic streets in Philadelphia. This tiny crossroads is a gem. It is in the famous Philadelphia “Gayborhood” and a favorite stop for walking tours, artists, film crews and photographers, offering that favorite "Kodak moment". It is a landmark.
However, it appears that the east end of Irving Street was not entered into the Philadelphia City Plan. And now, two property owners who live adjacent to the east end of Irving Street are taking steps that would allow them to gain private title to Irving Street. The Historical Commission has some authority over the street, but private ownership will make it more difficult for the city and citizens to protect.
In order to ensure the historic character of Irving Street and open access for the public, we request that the City of Philadelphia take the necessary steps to put the east end of Irving Street, at the intersection of Irving and Jessup Streets, on The City Plan.
