Iowa colleges and universities must teach about dyslexia!

I received my reading endorsement from the University of Iowa while completing my Elementary Education degree in 2012. I did not receive any training or coursework about dyslexia.

I received my reading endorsement from Drake University while completing the MST degree in Elementary Education. I did not learn about Dyslexia during my reading endorsement courses and I believe that it affects more students than we realize. School districts have dedicated PD to this topic, but I would have preferred to learn about it in my coursework before entering the classroom. School districts and the AEA should only be providing supplemental materials to aide in better understanding Dyslexia and providing support.

I received my BA with math and reading endorsements from UNI and my Master's from Drake. 18 years into my career I began to wonder if Dyslexia was affecting the students that I was having a hard time reaching - the ones where interventions were not being successful. It was only after leaving teaching, and being at the Capitol for my new position, that I stopped by a Dyslexia booth and began to understand how much I truly missed. Thankfully, the timing was perfect for my nephew, because of this stop by a booth, he was diagnosed and receives tutoring outside the school system. As teachers, we are general practitioners. Not enough is done to help us specialize and reach the students who are being left behind.

I received my degree in elementary education with a reading endorsement but did not learn about Dyslexia and how to help those students. I have to educate myself about it.

Please sign into law that teachers must have training on dyslexia and how to teach children who have this.

I received my degree in elementary education with a reading endorsement from the University of Iowa in 1999. I was not taught about Dyslexia. I have had to educate myself about it.

Teachers need to be taught how to address the needs of all learners. I have a reading minor from UNI, and am Reading Recovery trained, and still need additional training for dyslexic students. Please support our newest teachers, and their future students!

I am embarrassed that I do not know how to teach students with dyslexia. Our reading endorsements need to cover how to identify this important reading difference and best practices for assisting students with dyslexia.

As a 4th grade teacher of 14, it is important that teachers are aware of reading disabilities during their training. I feel even with my reading endorsement I was not prepared to help students properly once I got my dergree!

As a first grade teacher, I teach children how to read. Not only would it be helpful to recognize the signs of dyslexia, but having the knowledge how to teach these students would be vital. What's even better, knowing techniques that help students with dyslexia often help all students in the classroom as well.

Knowledge is power. A wealth of information and research is now available to inform educators about dyslexia and guide our teaching. This is a critical issue for teachers to ensure all students' literacy success. Please extend our strength as educators by requiring courses in dyslexia at Iowa colleges and universities. You can help us make a difference.

I was a special education teacher 9-12 for 15 years. I was so frustrated being unable to help my students become good readers that I searched for an instructional program that could make a difference. The Wilson Reading Program really made a difference in my students lives.

As an educator I have seen the struggles of students, parents, and teachers, not only in reading but as dyslexia encompasses all subjects. Some kids find a way to make this disability 'work' but all are that lucky. Legislation needs to be addressed, especially in the age of the Common Core. Good luck.

So many of the students who struggle to read have dyslexia, and even if they don't, the strategies that would be used for a dyslexic student are very effective for all struggling readers. Reading endorsements should include this basic instruction to benefit all students who need help with their reading.

Quite a few students silently struggle with some form of dyslexia. Many teachers don't know anything about it or that there are resources out there like fonts that help students read.

I was not giving any information about dyslexia during my education for my BA,MA and my reading specialist endorsement. I had to find classes on my own to get my certificate in Orton-Gillingham strategies.
