This is long overdue....the scenic work for artists has dwindled to less than one quarter what it was 10 years ago. If this concept isn't adopted there will be only a handful of artists in the union as they can't conceivably survive and will enter other professions or will work non-union and anywhere they can to meet their bills. I led a dual career by necessity for over 30 years, and it was not the union work that gave me the "extras" I was able to afford because of my hard work in a separate freelance career. There never was any safety or security in the union shops. As long as education, experience, and years worked in the industry are not the determining factor to acquiring a job, being part of the union, or receiving employment, and anyone can be hired ahead of us proficient artists, then the odds are against us making a living in this craft. The percentage concept makes it more reasonable and fair.

We discussed this years ago when I was on Eboard. If we don't do something, people are going to just keep dropping out and that's a shame to our community. After 20 years of working in the biz, I've taken a different line of work to survive. Want to keep my membership, but may have to let it go unless something changes for those of us who barely get any work. Thanks Tom for bringing it up. I will stay tuned as I make my decision whether to stay in or not.
