I think we can all say the square crop has become less of a quirky trademark of Instagram and more of a hassle as artists and photographers are building rapidly growing followings and need a more versatile platform to showcase their work. This would do nothing but widen the spectrum of appeal for Instagram and their already loyal users would be most appretiative.
