Its our responsibility as american citizens to realize that what is a protective right for some american's is also a right to a quality of life that is being taken away from the children of our country and it takes a village to make something work. It took all of us as a whole to glorify guns in the video games and the movies that that we allowed it the lives of children so now it our responsibility to find a way to protect all children and US citizens that are just innocent bystanders. If arming a security guard wards off harm then what is the issue? Stop using the right to bear arms to hide behind the fact that we did this to our own!!!

I appreciate your well intentioned fervor, however signing this (or any similar petition) will not make anyone safe. This is simply a "feel good" action that will not result in anyone being safer. Sorry...but facts are facts.

You are right...something needs to be done. Fund the mental health care system and help get these people the care they need before they hurt innocent people.

Please don't use emotion to decide where you stand on this issue. Facts prove that more gun-control does not equal less violence. Those cities and states with the strictest gun control laws have the highest violent crime rate, i.e. Chicago, NYC, Los Angeles, Oakland, Maryland, D.C. This is not about guns, it's about the terrible state of mental health care in this country. In every case like Arapahoe High the gunman was mentally unstable. Limiting guns or banning guns from law-abiding citizens will not "fix" this problem. For instance, 99.99% of legal gun-owners did not fire a weapon at anyone yesterday...nor will they today. The second amendment is in place for a very good reason...without it the other amendments would not stand for very long. Everyone keeps saying safety is needed for our schools, and I agree. Please notice that the reason the gunman was stopped at Arapahoe High was an armed Safety Office. If you want to keep schools safe, don't continue to make them easy targets as "gun-free zones." There are two common denominators in all of these tragedies that are the real problem - the gunmen have mental issues and they chose a place where no one else was armed. They knew they would not have anyone shooting back. Please use logic and reason when discussing this issue, and not emotions.

Lets think common sense. A parents permission should be required for anyone under 21 that wants to by a hand gun, rifle or shotgun. There should be a 30 day waiting period before you can have access to your new firearms.

I completely agree that background checks should be more stringent and that eduation is a must. However, I struggle in finding a balance between the safety of my child and sending him to school in what amounts to an armed camp. What message does that send? Is the mentality that guns are the answer contributing to the epidemic of gun violence? We need to find this balance. We need to find a sensible solution that limits access to destructive weaponry and limit access to those that should not have access to any weaponry.

I agree that more thorough background checks need to be completed AND there should a wait time before the gun is turned over to the purchaser!

Guns arnt the problem. Unarmed security is the problem and guns are used for Sports such as recreational shooting, and Hunting. Guns are what also insure that you'll never have to surrender rights of any kind. Another problem is that the value of human life is not taught as it once was. Now I will agree that maybe background checks could be a bit better but gun control doesn't solve any issues. The people who preform these shootings are breaking gun laws as it is by bringing the gun on school property as is. Are you going to run a background check on knives next. or bats? People will hurt people regardless of what they use, the point is we need to teach the value of human life and take measure to prevent bullying rather simply ban or restrict something because of the actions of a few.

All our young people deserve to live and learn in a safe environment! Background checks and gun control now! Colorado has seen gun sales go through the roof this year. More guns? More shootings. That is all guns are for, nothing else. Please stop this senseless violence now.
