Back in 1975 the view was that Jefferson Starship had rescued the Airplane's reputation from the indulgences of the Grunt years. There were enormously strong echoes of the Airplane's approach yet they added something new - perhaps less fire than peak Airplane but more melody. Not only did 'RED OCTOPUS' top the charts 4 separate times but the Starship were the first band in the world to receive a royalty rate of $1 per album sold. In 1984 they were (taking the Airplane years into account) the US' joint fourth biggest band with Kiss. And, throughout their time, they were a tremendous live act, often taking concert goers to the edge just like the Airplane. Also lLike the Airplane they spawned other acts - most notably Craig Chaquico's career in smooth jazz but Pete Sears and Aynsley Dunbar have gone on to play with other top acts.
