This petition is an urgent request for the allocation of additional practice spaces and performance venues for music students at Royal Holloway, University of London.
The extreme
shortage of practice and performance space for music students severely detracts
from the quality of the music degrees offered, as well as the educational
experience of all music performance students.
According to the Notional Learning Hours for performance courses in the music department, students are required to devote 180 hours to private practice time per 20-credit course. Over a 10-week term, performance students should dedicate 2.5 hours to private practice daily. However, due to a shortage of space, the 217 performance students have, on average, access to only 4.5 hours of practice time per week.
Furthermore, the limited access to suitable venues for performance classes and assessed performances drastically reduces the ability of the university to offer music performance degrees of comparable standards with other universities. Though the music department currently ranks highly in the university league tables, it is quickly losing its ability to maintain these high standards.
In order to reverse this trend, we urge the university:
1. To make the Founders practice rooms, currently allocated to non-music students only, available to music students.
2. To make all available time in the Picture Gallery, Boiler House, and Windsor building, along with all other suitable for performance, bookable by music students for practice purposes.
3. To increase the available time and space for music performance venues and classes in all suitable performance locations.
4. To prioritise the expansion of existing music facilities.
Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support for these goals.
