The government finally committed to the budget increases we fought for to support our athletes and facilities. It feels surreal to see this investment become a reality after so much work. I will be keeping a close watch to ensure these funds reach the associations and stars who need them …

This Petition is being circulated by Sandro Micallef a Maltese Sports Journalist on a personal initiative. His intention is to create a formal Pressure Group formed of individuals who love Sport and would like to see Maltese Sport improve with tangible results.

The views shared below are personal and not of his past or present employers.

The aim of this petition is to create awareness to the Government of Malta and Sport Malta formerly knows as KMS (Malta Sports Council) about the fact that it is not acceptable anymore in 2016 that Sport is granted more or less 4million euros in the yearly Government's budget, which includes, capital investments in sports facilities, direct subsistence to the Malta National Sports School, running of Sport Malta, improvement of facilities, Sports Scholarships Schemes, assistance to MOC and Associations / Federations.

Sign this genuine petition to ask the Government irrespective of any political party at the helm to increase the annual budget to Sport Malta to at least EUR5 million and to at least EUR1million to the MOC (Maltese Olympic Committee) for direct investment in training for Elite athletes per year.

If you love Sport, follow Sport, practice Sport, and support Sport: YOU SHOULD SIGN THIS PETITION AND SHARE ON FACEBOOK

Seeing two hundred and fifty people back this call for better funding makes me feel like our athletes finally have a fighting chance. I have spent years covering our local talent and knowing they deserve more than the current crumbs keeps me pushing forward.

this petition should not only be intended to to increase the budget for local sport. Officials in charge of these funds, need to be properly educated on the right way of spending the funds.

Invest in sports infrastruture on a long term plan, not just buildings but also education, therapies, elite schemes etc particularly in athletics.

The sport budget is ridiculous when there is enough scientific evidence showing that sport help to reduce chronic illnesses which in return may help reducing the capital expenditure on health.

It is a pity that focus is mainly on football in Malta. There are other sports that Maltese athletes are excelling in but are not funded which is a pity. Take w'polo for example...it is a very popular sport but with only one main pool in Malta which is not enough.

Im a player for the maltese national team of handball, and a fan of sports in general. I feel a great lack of investment given for Maltese sports to grow especially the ones which are less popular in malta but which shows great results and need that extra help financially for a faster growth such as my sport.

I am a national Maltese hockey player... Hockey in Malta isn't that common although we have a very high level.. Even as a club Sliema hotsticks doesn't have a pitch and a club house.. I wish that the Maltese government will give more importance on this sport
