Dr. Christine Burton, Members of the Millburn Board of Education and Millburn Middle School Administration:

We are writing to urge you to support the proposal at Millburn Middle School for daily gym throughout the school year with health class as a cycle class. This approach is in line with the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Currently students only have daily physical education for three quarters and have daily health class for one quarter.

Our students’ physical and mental wellbeing, as well as their academic performance, would benefit greatly from steady physical education in their schedule. The body of research supporting this expansive. Below are a few studies referenced in the “School Health Practices and Policies Study” from 2016:

  • Janssen I, Leblanc AG. Systematic review of the health benefits of physical activity and fitness in school-aged children and youth. International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, 2010;7:40.
  • Michael SL, Merlo C, Basch C, et al. Critical connections: health and academics. Journal of School Health. 2015; 85(11):740–58.
  • Institute of Medicine. Educating the Student Body: Taking Physical Activity and Physical Education to School. Washington, DC: The National Academies Press, 2013.
  • Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Midcourse Report Subcommittee of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. Physical activity guidelines for Americans midcourse report: strategies to increase physical activity among youth. Washington, DC: U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, 2012.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,

PJ Kaiser

I think this is a very important issue. When kids enter school in the dark, and leave school with just an hour or two of daylight, having gym in school makes a huge difference. I see both my 6th and 7th grader in a “funk” during their quarter of health. They need that break in the day that Physical Education gives them to make them feel healthy and productive. Thanks!

Middle School is a critical time for extra P.E. due to the gap between elementary-age sports (youth baseball, soccer, football) and the opportunity to join the HS teams. P.E. should also include other wellness education such as nutrition, importance of enough sleep, use of sun block, and limiting backpack weight.

The students spend far too much time sitting and doing HW. No time for outside activities during the school week. P E is very necessary in their life - it’s the only physical activity they get for most of the school year.

I strongly support the suggestion that kids should continue Gym classes in middle school. It’s good for health and also helps kids concentrate and well as relieve stress

I couldn't agree more with this petition. Physical exercise improves the quality of life for anyone needless to say how much young teenagers who are under much stress academically and socially could benefit from such a change. It will increase their productivity in school and I'm certain will produce a much better focused and goal oriented students. Also, I cannot stress enough how damaging it is to kids of this age not to have recess outdoors during the day. They will be better and the teachers will receive a much better focused and less antsy crowd. Please apply these changes.

With everyone becoming more seditary along with increased technology use, it is important to convey the importance of exercise by having gym each day. Exercise can also help alleviate some of the stress that the kids these days face. Finally, Kids should be allowed and encouraged to go outside at lunch time. I understand that this practice stopped due to construction of the GEO Thermal system, but has never been reinstated.

I strongly support this petition. Our children need exercise and fresh air every day to keep their bodies and minds healthy.
