This project is vainglorious, sanctimonious and hideous. It is a desecration of the environment of a National Park, the (sadly already beleaguered) reputation of Canada (and the national anthem with those ridiculous rings, squares and sanctuaries), and an insult to the veterans of overseas wars. If it is erected, we must hope that this Harper and corporate-sponsored monument to vulgarity will be consistently vandalised.

Personally, it's not the site that offends, it's the design. An ostentatious, patriarchal figure.

As a Canadian citizen living overseas, I hope that the various sensitivities around this project are looked at; Canada's reputation has already suffered a great deal through this present administration's policies.

I am completely opposed to this memorial; we have 7000 existing memorials just in Canada, and another is not necessary. This project also clearly violates the mandate of Parks Canada and will prove a drain on an underfunded and starved depratment. Finally, the design is ridiculous and hideously inappropriate; there is no such thing as Mother Canada, and the rest of the design is pure sentimental dreck. This is solely an excuse for corporate advertising and should be stopped dead.

The statue itself is ugly and meaningless, but the commercial sidelines proposed — a restaurant and gift shop — are beyond the pale at a site of great beauty in a national park!

This tacky monument does not belong in a national park! It would ruin the natural beauty of the area.

Making this lovely natural place into an eyesore for a purpose that could (and should) easily be done somewhere else is reprehensible. And the scale of the proposed statue is so large it will sully the view from Middle Head to Neil's Harbour! Tasteless, and far from the purpose of the national park. Put the memorial in a city facing east if you must, but keep out of our park. I will avoid the whole area rather than take any friends or family to see the desecration.

This tasteless project must be stopped. It is in violation of the Parks Canada mandate.

Not only is this monument a hideous, proto-Stalinist monstrosity, but it is sitting on top of a unique geological feature whose existence should be preserved for all Canadians

This is our national park and should be protected from this type of project. National parks are to preserve the natural beauty of our country for now and future generations!!

I believe this project, if it goes ahead, will spell the beginning of a downward spiral that will result in serious damage to Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

Just returned from Cape Breton and can't imagine this site being destroyed by this piece of folly.

This absolutely must not proceed. It is a gross profit-oriented co-opting of Canada's war dead, and a complete violation of Parks Canada's mandate.

This monstrosity will forever destroy the beauty of Green Cove, interfere with the ecosystem. It is ugly beyond even my low expectations of national monumental "art". It was conceived, planned and funded by the government of Canada with no consultation with the public or with the local residents. It is a monument to corporate greed and insensitivity. If Harper has an extra 100 million dollars to throw around perhaps he would like to take car of our LIVING veterans whose funding has been withheld and cancelled.
