Tommy (Thomas J.) Gallagher was a Brooklynite for all of his 88 years. His son Kevin told us that except for the years he was in the Air Force his whole life was lived within about a 2 mile radius of the Prospect Park Y. Following is an excerpt from his obituary which appeared in The Daily News: Tom was a true reflection of the vibrant and eclectic city in which he lived. During World War II, Tom joined the Air Force where he acquired his life-long passion for aviation. He was a professional basketball player before the NBA existed and a fan of the game ever after. Tom was a math teacher and mentor at IS 88 for over 35 years. He was a lifetime member of the YMCA, a lover of harmonica music and a Rubik's cube aficionado. As you know, the petition we are circulating is to get a plaque installed at the Y in his memory where he was, as we understand it, a member for 65 years.

He was a fixture at the Prospect Park Y for as long as I can remember. Always had that harmonica on him. Put the plaque up!!!

Mr. Gallagher was the best math teacher I ever had at IS 88. He really cared about us kids. A plaque at the Y is the least we can do for a legend.
