Improve Safety on Cedar Blvd, Newark, CA

We, the undersigned residents of Newark, are deeply concerned about the unsafe conditions on Cedar Blvd.
Cedar Blvd has become increasingly dangerous due to:
- Excessive speeding and reckless driving
- Red-light running at key intersections
- Frequent collisions with parked vehicles along the curb
- Ongoing risk to pedestrians, bicyclists, and neighborhood residents
The recent accident near Lafayette and Cedar Blvd on August 31st, that injured 5 people when a car ran into a person's house and the other car was engulfed in flames, underscores the urgent need for action. Many of us have witnessed dangerous driving firsthand, and residents are fed up with the lack of safety on this critical corridor.
We call on the City of Newark to take immediate steps to improve safety on Cedar Blvd by:
1. Implementing quick-action measures such as:
- Installing permanent radar speed feedback signs at strategic locations
- Freshly painted edge lines to narrow lanes and protect parked cars
- Targeted traffic enforcement focused on speeding and reckless driving
2. Advancing medium-term improvements such as:
- More streetlights to improve visibility in dark areas
- Raised crosswalks (with lights) and curb extensions to protect pedestrians
- Automated enforcement tools (red-light and speed cameras) at high-crash intersections
3. Coordinating with residents to ensure transparency, communication, and community input throughout the process.
Why This Matters- Safer streets will reduce crashes and injuries for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
- Traffic calming will protect property, especially parked vehicles vulnerable to sideswipe collisions.
- Slowing speeds and improving visibility will make Cedar Blvd livable again for families, children, and seniors.
