The PIN feature that Netflix (streaming division) released a few months ago is awesome!

Unfortunately the PIN feature needs two more features* in order to become an adequate parental control feature:

1. profile PINs so that each profile can get different age restriction, as well as

2. restriction of the whole profile, i.e. show-browsing thumbnails/descriptions, with that same profile PIN*.

Here are more details on #1 and #2 above:

1. A 3-4 year old's profiles wouldn't have the same age access as a 9 year old's profile, which in turn would not have the same age access as the parent's adult profile (currently a PIN only has a single age level to set once for all profiles, as opposed to once for each profile).

  • For example, currently a 9-year-old is asking for the PIN because users have to keep the PIN age restriction at a lower (around age 4 or 5 years old). This new feature would correct this deficiency by allowing users to set a different age restriction for the 9-year-old's profile than the 3-4 year old's profile.

2. The profile's thumbnail images that users see when they browse for shows to watch would not be accessible without a PIN either, since navigating to that profile would require a PIN.

  • IMPORTANT: It would also be important to have a session time-out feature that requires PIN re-entry (just as the current PIN feature has) so that after five or whatever minutes of show-browsing inactivity, the session ends and the user has to enter their PIN (and optionally for developers, also have the user reselect their profile) in order to start browsing shows or streaming shows again.
  • For example, currently children can both see a lot of parent profile horror/violent/sex-suggestive images if they navigate to the parent's profile (which profile has no age restriction). This new feature would correct this deficiency by requiring a PIN in order to even browse through those shows and see those images, and would re-implement this after 3 or 5 minutes (or whatever) of inactivity.

Thanks for your consideration of this new feature, Netflix! We hope that this feature suggestion resonates as of high importance since there are many families with kids using Netflix, who want to create an age-appropriate environment within Netflix.

*(ideally the entire account settings area should be locked down by the same PIN in order to give full control to parents and not to children -- but for simplicity, this feature can be included in a separate feature request)
