Reports and personal accounts from inmates show that meals often lack proper nutrition, are insufficient in quantity, and sometimes include spoiled or unappetizing food. Additionally, many facilities struggle to maintain cleanliness and basic safety standards, impacting the health of both inmates and staff. This situation not only harms individuals but also creates long-term costs for the state in healthcare and recidivism.

We urge the South Carolina Department of Corrections to:

1. Improve the nutritional quality and quantity of meals served in all state correctional facilities.
