Implement Incentives for Target Shoppers to Bring Their Own Bags
Over 10 years ago, California became the first state in the United States to completely ban single-use plastic bags to attempt to reduce the amount of plastic waste that is destroying our planet and polluting our oceans. However, the heavy-duty recyclable plastic bags that shoppers can pay 10 cents for look very similar to the retired single-use plastic bags, and data has shown that very few shoppers reuse these bags or even recycle them. In fact, last year, Californians threw away more bags by weight than when the law was first passed.
Target in particular is a company that offers these bags at checkout and could make a huge difference by changing their bag policy. I urge Target to take action by implementing an incentive program that rewards shoppers for bringing their own reusable bags in order to reduce the amount of waste generated by the company's bags.
Specifically I request that, within the next year, Target offer a discount for each reusable bag: provide a discount of $0.05 to $0.10 for each reusable bag that a shopper brings and uses at checkout. This discount could be applied to the total purchase or as a cash incentive. Target should also offer a variety of reusable bag options for purchase at checkout, including affordable and durable bags that can be used for multiple shopping trips. Finally, I ask that Target track and reward sustainable behavior by implementing a system to track the number of reusable bags used by each customer and reward frequent reusable bag users with special discounts.
By implementing these measures, Target can encourage more sustainable shopping practices and reduce the waste generated by plastic bags. This initiative aligns with Target's commitment to corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability.
Thank you for considering my petition. Together, we can make a positive impact on the environment and create a greener future.
