Impact of Independence HS sharing with 3 Charter Schools

It is outrageous that the decision to house 3 additional schools are housed on one site. The integrity of Independence is put in jeopardy

I understand that all schools have wants and needs, sports teams, and other extracurricular activities. It makes me wonder why several charter schools can’t join as one. Personally, I am a member of the Independence Winter Guard. For those who don’t know what colorguard is, we’re the ones who spin and toss the flags, sabres, and rifles in marching band. Winter guard is for us to continue what we do during the winter, therefore an indoor activity. I guess since we don't count as a “sports team,” we have been stuck with practicing outside on the field on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9. This is far from ideal because we perform in front of judges inside a gym. Imagine a soccer team that was stuck practicing inside a gym. On Tuesday, January 5, we were planning on practicing on the field, but there was a girl’s soccer game going on. We were stuck with practicing in the area of uneven ground near dropoff between D villa and the music building. Please do something about this.

As a senior of KIPP, I find it absurd that all of these allegations are made towards my school. Our school values student safety as our number one priority, which is the reason why we were taught not to socialize with other schools. All solutions that are proposed are in favor of Independence High school, and do not take any considerations for the charters. KIPP is the best non-private school in the Bay area, 13th in the state and 79th in the country. We manage to have these academic achievements (including a National Blue Ribbon award in 2014 when we were top 5 in the state and top 50 in the U.S.) with even worse circumstances. Almost every portable shares 2 classes, our basketball team practices at 5:50 am (since 2012) and plays games until 10:15pm, and not to mention having 450 students in 100'x100' space. And it's not like we are not fighting the effort to eliminate theses issues; we have bought numerous amount of video equipment to find the people who commit offenses. But every time we manage to get cameras, they get stolen or damaged over the weekend. It seems to me that the only solution to this predicament is to have an actual committee with representatives of each school to find the best solutions for all schools (I wouldn't mind representing my school), instead of making entitled fallacies made by the biggest school.

My kid also went to charter (including Kipp,) transferred and finished up 2yrs at Indy. We were so glad to get her out of there. The charters are a massive burden. The education is not superior and the impact of overcrowding has been incredibly damaging.

Since we have more than one basketball team we already have practice in the small gym and sometimes we also get kicked out of the small gym because other charter schools are using it. We also sometimes have to practice late because of this issue.

It was fine with just KIPP there,but adding more causes confliction with the parking or dropping off. There's more students , which may cause fights between one another.

The Charter Schools' students are not held accountable for inappropriate behaviors at Independence HS. When Charter School students cause problems, the Charter schools are not held accountable. This is just one of the situations that needs to be resolved.

Aside from all the other issues, the traffic on Educational Park drive is insane. Parents double and triple park. They block the street, stopping traffic, to let kids in and out of the car. Kids dash into and through traffic, popping out between cars suddenly. Someone is going to get hurt.

Coming from James Logan High School in Union City, our campus had 4,000 students. But to have 4 different school programs on one high school campus is too much.
