My utter frustration with the administration in this matter is their lack of leadership. The superintendent and principal, for whom I have much respect, and whose service has been exemplary to this point, were shockingly disappointing in the treatment of Coach Burgess. Good leaders take the "stock" legal advice under consideration and come up with their own solutions to challenges. That's why they're put in those positions of leadership. This was a complete "punt" on their part, deferring to the lawyers and the "cover my 6" approach. They could have allowed Coach Burgess to continue his service on the pool deck, for instance, as long as another coach was on deck...how hard would that have been? Removing him from the classroom without any communication for months was also a very timid approach for a teacher/coach with a 30-plus-year track record without any other such allegations or even hints of behavior as accused in this case. "Leadership" like that does not give much confidence to the rest of the faculty, given how little it took to throw out a 30+ year reputation. Leadership isn't supposed to be easy. It's earned. And once it's earned, much is expected of those in leadership positions. My assessment of the superintendent and principal in this case is that they are senior administrators....not leaders.

Seems ridiculous to punish someone who hasn’t been even charged.

Played water polo against Randy's teams in the late 70's. He taught his team sportsmanship over victory. I've always respected his strong character. Do the right thing.

Actually grandparent of 3 CUSD Alumni. Randy has always been a great role model for my three grandchildren and was always there for my grandson when his Dad was deployed. CSUD has been lucky to have such a caring teacher and coach.

Protect the educators second only to protect the students. It sounds pretty clear that this man's rights and life has been unfairly altered due to unfounded malicious actions. His record speaks for itself...he has dedicated his life to bettering thousands of youths lives.

I pray that such a dignified educator was not treated as a criminal without due process. Without evidence or charges to the contrary, he should be reinstated and given an apology. I knew him as a player (9 yrs), as a coach (12 yrs), and as a colleague. I have literally spent thousands of hours with him. All I witnessed was a man who taught with integrity and passion to build strong young men and women for our community.

I have known Randy Burgess for 40 years and he would never do such an act of harm, verbally or physically, to a child. He is an upstanding coach, person and teacher. He has high standards for his students/athletes and he should in this day and age, he should. He makes his students/athletes better people. He is being dealt with unjustly.

Coach Randy Burgess has been one of the most formative figures in my life. The environment he fosters is rewarding, challenging, encouraging, and shaping. I only have fond memories of him and will always stand by him and his incredible contributions to Coronado High school, the swim and water polo teams, and the Coronado community as a whole.

Coach Burgess was my coach and mentor for 9 years. He was an important father figure and male role model in my life, when I did not have a father of my own to meet those standards. He deserved way more respect from CUSD. Do the right thing and reinstate Randy Burgess. - Ashley Young (Class of 2010)
