"Otherness" at IMC in Leeds: An Open Letter

Karra Shimabukuro PhD candidate, University of New Mexico I was not at IMC but I am very disturbed at not only hearing about what happened, but the non-apologies and hatred and vitriol that people have issued in response to being asked to listen about these issues.

I have already written to the IMC in similar vein as President of the Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship. However, I wish to add my voice, and those of our SMFS membership, to this present petition.

While I did not attend the IMC this year, I can see that many people of color were extremely troubled. I think it's vital that we listen to their voices.

I think the most critical point is that if we in medieval studies do not push our field toward greater inclusion and self awareness, we will become entirely irrelevant from an intellectual and moral position.
