This is a complete farce, the police should have counselled him and explained to him regards the complaints they had received! End of story. But to charge a serving soldier doing his training whether for SF selection or not is rediculous. Then to publicaly shame him is a disgrace to the media, police and the courts. He deserve a public apology and the charges dropped.

anyone who can mistake that sort of metal frame for a real weapon didn't actually pay attention in the first place. Anyone from a space of 50m would be able to tell it was a fake!
