In a thoughtless response to the suicide by a fourth year girl at IIT Kanpur, the administration at the prestigious college is considering the blackout of internet usage after midnight till 8:00 am for students. Apart from being a knee-jerk reaction which aims to solve a supposed symptom that is not proven to be the cause of suicides, it points to a deeper problem in the underlying mentality of the administration that thinks that it is the students who are always in the wrong and their wasteful habits are the cause of higher levels of stress.

Apart from being completely irrelevant, this action also causes a major inconvenience to the very academic performance that the administration is trying to protect. Internet access is vital to academic studies, projects and assignments. Due to a packed daily schedule, night time is the only time when most students are able to catch up to some work, or for some destressing.
