There is a vast difference between a few properly and considerately managed bee hives and a totally irresponsible set-up. The hives currently at issue have been placed with extreme consideration to the neighbors, well away from property lines, with flowering plants and plentiful water readily available. I ask, have the people filing the complaint done their part and removed all flowering plants from their yards to minimize bee traffic and risk of injury?

I think the township needs to do a better job of researching working policies in other places before jumping the gun and saying no to anything progressive. To my understanding these colonies were in place before any ordinance and is a reactionary response to fearful neighbors. There are plenty of examples (Like in Pittsburgh) where a responsible beekeeper can keep colonies for the benefit of the community safely and with some minimal regulation. The Commonwealth already requires an apiary to be registered and inspected on a bi-annual basis. Surely a township could follow suit is some fashion. Rather than just saying no and fining people they should be looking for a reasonable solution.

Signing this may seem redundant since I'm the beekeeper for these bees but my intention is to preserve the opportunity for hobby beekeepers to practice responsibly in an urban setting.

When I was young I lived in the city and saw wild honey bees in my backyard all the time. Now you rarely see them because they have difficulty surviving in the wild. That’s why I started bee keeping as a hobby. I find them very interesting and so do all the people that find out I keep them. Why anyone would object to someone keeping bees. It is too bad that there are uninformed people out there.

The alarming decline in bee populations should trigger policies that encourage their growth. A shortage of pollinators will have a much more painful sting for our region than someone's childhood fears of stepping on a bee.
